Waffling on, Seriously

It’s funny (peculiar), how things often turn out. How changes appear in your life if you let them. I am looking forward to a slight change in my life in 2017.

The back story:
I have been co-running the Imagination Club with my mate Jeffrey Baumgartner for around 11 years.

For those who don’t know what that is, let me briefly give you the history behind it.

The back story of the back story:
I have been giving trainings and facilitating workshops and events for years. Mostly in Adult education, but also running pub quizzes, open Mic nights, Jam Sessions and other similar public events. So speaking in public is not as scary as it once was when I had just started but can still be a scary place.

Sometimes though,  you want to try out something new, just change the format or content slightly, or, as you learn and evolve, you may want to try out different techniques you may have just learnt at a training you have attended or it could be that you want to try something completely new, outside of the box. I realise that it is not always a good idea to do this on an unsuspecting public in case it goes horribly wrong.

So the Imagination Club was born. It was put in place to give us and others a platform to allow us to experiment, test run, and prototype ideas and methods until we got comfortable with them. Thankfully there are a lot of trainers and facilitators out there (and wannabe ones too) that also love the opportunity to test run ideas and also be able to promote themselves and get great feedback into the bargain.

It was and still is a win-win situation. Trainers, coaches, facilitators, speakers, professional workshoppers all need a place to do this and people love to learn, if this can be done cheaply and effectively, what more can you ask for? We also provide drinks and snacks and time to Network before and after the sessions. We have also been known to go for drinks and meals after the workshops, so it is very social too.

Indeed, the club is not all about the people who give the workshops, a very important part of the club, the life-blood really, is the audience. Without them it just wouldn’t work. The Feedback is the key and so the loyal fans and members of the Imagination Club give it that magic that makes it all come together.

So, What’s going to be new in 2017?

Serious Waffle Sessions

This will be a platform of interesting talks where the speaker will do his or her best to give at least one thing the audience can take away, (but preferably three) and enjoy their 15 minutes of fame.

With the 2017 Serious Waffle Sessions we are also going to cater for speakers separately, we will keep the same format for experimental workshops on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month for the Imagination Club, but on the 3d Tuesday of each month we will introduce the aforementioned Serious Waffle Sessions where people, who are mainly public speakers, will get the opportunity to come and speak for 15-18 minutes on a chosen theme and then do a 5 min Q&A session with the audience. We will have three speakers per event.

It will be a fantastic learning experience, stretch us a little bit and will make a change from the usual Workshop format. I can’t wait.
